Earlier today, Kazunori Yamauchi unveiled his new blog for Gran Turismo called !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . Interestingly, his first entry touches on the subject of engine sounds.

I'm glad Kaz and the Polyphony Digital crew are responding to our cries for improvement. With this and the surprise of v1.09, 2014 is the year for GT6, and we know GT7 will be awesome!

Wait, does it say anywhere that there will be an update for sounds?

it doesn't explicitly say it, but knowing about this understands that Kaz listens to us mortals ! :D

Will it be like most other things GT and have a strong Japanese focus. Like will we have Chevy V8 sound for all Chevys and Ford V8 sound for all Fords and then 52 "unique" exhaust for every variant of skyline?

Well, i have to say that in my ear somehow the Skylines sounds the same if they come from the same generation. My friend has 3 R34 (GT-R, GT-R VSpec II Nur, GT-R M-Spec) and it's sounds quite the same. But maybe that's just me.

For those that need some perspective on just how bad the sounds are, here's a video of GT6's Stratos...
And here's a video of the same car in a game that came out nearly ten years ago.
